April 2019 Newsletter - President's Message

National Nutrition Month has come to an end, but that certainly doesn't mean that our work has.  I am so proud of what our state is doing to promote the health and wellness of our communities.  This month, four of our districts requested funds from TAND to use for promoting National Nutrition Month in their district.  You will learn a little more about each below in the newsletter.  You will also find other highlights from across the state where National Nutrition Month was celebrated and promoted.

There are a few things in process that members of your Board of Directors are working on.  First, we are actively working to identify a new website company to use for a new TAND website in 2019-2020.  This is very exciting for our board and members alike to allow for a more user friendly and secure interface.  Next, the Strategic Planning Committee is working to develop the TAND Strategic Plan for the coming three years.  This Strategic Plan will be used as the incoming Board creates their plans of work from year to year, and will guide us in meeting the needs of our members, and the communities we serve.

Thank you and Happy April!

National Nutrition Month Highlight

On March 27th, dietetics students at UTC created the menu for the Crossroads dining (Cafeteria) room.  Healthy alternatives were developed for the Grill, the Home Zone, the Pizza Station and the soup bar.  These included a Turkey Burger in a lettuce Wrap, with sweet potato fries; Grilled chicken with pineapple salsa, served with cauliflower mash, broccoli, brown rice, and chickpeas; Southwestern Black Bean pizza; Spinach, Kale and Mozzarella Pizza on whole wheat dough; and, minestrone soup.  They were all a hit for faculty and students alike!  Great work UTC Dietetics Students.

Congratulations to the 2019-2020 TAND Board of Directors!

Promoting Dietitians in Knoxville

March is National Nutrition Month! There’s no better time to promote our profession. With TAND’s support, the Knoxville Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics launched an initiative to promote dietitians as the nutrition experts in the Knoxville community. Funding was utilized to create colorful, eye-catching postcards that promote visiting the online KAND Referral Directory to get connected to a local dietitian. The cards highlight the wide array of services dietitians provide from diabetes to weight management to food allergies and more. Dietitians’ training and expertise are highlighted on the reverse side of the postcard. KAND plans to distribute this resource within our organization and to healthcare settings, physicians, community partners and anyone who may be able to get clients connected to RDs.

Wanted: Future Leaders!

Have you served in a leadership role through your local district that has left you wanting more? Do you have a desire to help lead the next generation of TAND leaders and make a mighty impact in our state? Are you inspired by the thought of being a change agent at the top, helping to bring to life our mission for our members? If you answered “yes” to these questions, then consider a TAND Board of Directors position!

CDR Approved Advanced Practice Specialty Certification Scholarship - Training Reimbursement

One of the goals of the TAND Education Pillar is to increase the number of RDNs in Tennessee that are certified as specialists in their area of practice. To encourage current RDN members to pursue specialty practice certifications approved by CDR, TAND is offering scholarships up to $1000 each to qualified applicants. Scholarship recipients are required to complete the training and certification by May 1, 2019 in order to apply for reimbursement. Deadline for scholarship applications is May 1, 2019 with notification of awards by June 1, 2019. Board Member Spotlight

Name: Kim Dempsey, MS, RD, LDN, CDE

City: Paris

Workplace: Henry County Medical Center

Position: Chief Clinical Dietitian/Diabetes Educator

Position with TAND Board of Directors: SPRC (State Professional Recruitment/Retention Chair)

Tell us what your position is responsible for, and what you like most about it.

- As SPRC, I help to ensure members and potential members understand the full range of member benefits.  I want RDNs to join the Academy (and therefore TAND) for the length of their careers... and then some!

What do you like most about being a member of TAND and/or The Academy?

- I love all the low-cost and no-cost CPEU opportunities available through the Academy, and especially the DPGs. It's also great to be able to network at a local and state level and to be able to connect with RDs in similar practice settings through DPG events at FNCE.

What is your favorite hobby/pastime outside of work?

- Whatever my kids rope me in to!  We love day trips around TN and KY.  They  play softball and baseball, so we spend a lot of time at the ball park. I help with children's activities at our church.  I love to  read, and I've recently started to learn watercolor painting.

What is your favorite place to visit in Tennessee and why?

- Our family loves visiting both the Memphis and Nashville Zoos, and we're about 2 hours away from either, which makes it a great day trip.  Kentucky Lake is right up the road, so there are always opportunities for fun right in our backyard.
