October 2019 Newsletter – President’s Message

For those going to FNCE, do we want to try to meet up somewhere for a TAND photo op? Email me if you are interested… bcarro18@utm.edu. I’m sure we won’t be able to get a day and time that will fit everyone’s schedule and maybe we can come up with a couple of times. Additionally, if you get together with other TAND members and take a picture, please email eatrighttn@gmail.com and we’ll do our best to get it on social media. I have a list of all TAND members going. I can send it to you if you email me. I will delete personal information such as address and phone numbers and just have the names listed.

Congratulations to Medallion Award winner and long time TAND member Eileen Stellefson Myers! She recently relocated to Florida and is not officially of member of TAND, but we still claim her as our own. Also congratulations are in order to Elizabeth Hall for claiming the 2019 Outstanding Preceptor Award for the North Central Region! Both of these folks will be honored at FNCE.

We have TAND members presenting at the following FNCE sessions:

  • President Elect and Advocacy Pillar Chair Ginger Carney is moderating “384. Myths and Misconceptions of Breastfeeding – A Cultural Perspective” on Tuesday the 29th from 09:45-11:15 in 120-ABC.
  • On Saturday at a pre-conference presentation, Dee Pratt has a talk entitled “Telehealth: Navigating Steps Forward” and speaking to national reimbursement group.
  • As a Delegate, Mary Catherine Schallert will be attending House of Delegates meetings in Philadelphia.
  • Amy Richards is presenting a poster on Monday as are Lisa Sheehan-Smith, Patty Poe and Liz Smith.

Try to get over and say HI to them. As you can see, TAND members are very active at FNCE and receiving deserved recognition at the national level!

In other news, I signed our first sponsorship contract for the Annual Meeting and want to give a shout out to the MTSU Online MPS Leadership in Nutrition Program for helping to make the meeting possible this year. Being in academia myself, I know how tight budgets and funds can be and I think it worthwhile to recognize a program for their help and support. Thanks to all of you for your membership and service to the greatest affiliate in the nation! Let me know if there is anything I can do for you or your district or if you have any questions.

Message from Students of Tennessee Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (STAND) 

Greetings fellow TAND members! My name is Olyvia Norton, and I am the President of the Students of Tennessee Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (STAND) for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. I am currently a senior in the Nutrition and Food Science program at Middle Tennessee State University, and will be graduating this spring. I have the privilege of working as a Dietitian’s Assistant for a local dietitian here in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. This has been a wonderful learning opportunity, and it is exciting to apply what I am learning in the classroom in real-life experiences! After graduation I plan to complete a dietetic internship and progress to become a registered dietitian. I’ve considered many options in the field of dietetics, but my work experience has revealed a passion for enteral nutrition and also outpatient care, so my goal is to start my career in the clinical area of practice and see where that journey takes me. As the president of STAND, I would like to make students aware of the goals of STAND and volunteer opportunities available through this organization. Student members of TAND are automatically considered members of STAND, so no membership action is required beyond the annual TAND membership process. STAND is an organization which strives to connect dietetic students across the state of Tennessee by providing networking, leadership, and volunteer opportunities. The other Board Members and I, along with our faculty advisor, are working hard to increase awareness of this organization and participation in STAND this year. We currently have two upcoming opportunities to be aware of this year:

  1. STAND is currently searching for a student leader to serve as the Social Media Chair for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Students enrolled in any DPD program or Dietetic Internship within Tennessee are encouraged to volunteer for this leadership role. Responsibilities would include managing the STAND Facebook page and promoting STAND events through social media throughout the year. If you would like to volunteer to serve, please send me a short paragraph explaining why you are an excellent candidate for the position via email at ogn2a@mtmail.mtsu.edu.
  2. Beginning in November, STAND will be hosting the “Dual of the DPDs Donation Drive.” During this fundraiser, we encourage students enrolled in each of the DPD programs in Tennessee to collect non-perishable food items such as canned soups, canned vegetables, peanut butter, etc. Donations will be given to local organizations focused on feeding individuals and families in need. The DPD program which collects the most items by December will be recognized in the January TAND Newsletter, and students of the winning program will also receive a prize!

MAND Event Recap

The Memphis district had a wonderful fall breakfast on September 18th which kicked off our membership drive with a wonderful presentation by Jason Pipkin on leadership. On October 6th we have a creative fundraising event schedule by using our calligraphy skills at a local brewery. That same week Blair Mize, MS, RDN, CSSD, LDN, CEDRD-S from Memphis Nutrition Group will be speaking on “Baby’s First Bite: The Art and Science of a Self-Feeding Approach” for our October continuing education event. On behalf of the MAND board we are looking forward to a busy yet fun fall semester!

 

Mark your calendars: TAND Hill Day is February 12th!

Planning has begun for the annual TAND Hill Day in Nashville. To help keep expenses low, the schedule for the day should allow most to drive in early that morning and return home that evening. The program likely will include representatives from the Tennessee Assembly along with some other useful information presented to us regarding active legislation. Our elected officials LOVE to meet with their local constituents. Although students are always welcomed, we need RDNs (voting Tennessee residents) there to make a difference in our state with our State Representatives and Senators. If you have never been to our day on the hill, please consider attending this year. It is your chance to advocate for your profession and exercise your civic duty by speaking up for nutrition issues that are important to us as Registered Dietitian Nutritionists. House of Delegates (HOD) Surveys

Hello TAND Members, The House of Delegates (HOD) selected the topic of Technology: Big Data for discussion at the fall HOD meeting. As a part of the HOD meeting dialogue, delegates will dive further into what is needed to elevate the role of RDNs and NDTRs and improve outcomes in all areas of practice by leveraging Big Data. This is where we need your help! Please take this Survey on Technology: Big Data before Thursday, October 3, 2019. The survey should take approximately five minutes of your time. Our members’ results will be shared with us (your delegate/s) as well as the entire HOD to help inform the dialogue on Friday, October 25 during the HOD Fall 2019 Meeting.

HOD will also be discussing the Total Diet Approach philosophy during the fall HOD meeting. Please take this Survey on the Total Diet Approach before Friday, October 11, 2019. The survey should take approximately five minutes of your time. Please note that if you already completed the Member Engagement Zone question on the Total Diet Approach, you will be exited from the survey as your results were previously captured and reported. Our members’ results will be shared with us (your delegate/s) to help inform the dialogue on Saturday, October 26 during the HOD Fall 2019 Meeting.
