November 2019 Newsletter – President’s Message

The year is in full swing and Pillars are in full stride getting things done! If you are asked to help, and can, please do. Additionally, reach out to your local district and see where your skills and talents might be put to good use even before being asked. 

I am excited and looking forward to presenting “State of the State Updates” to NAND (Nov 4th), MAND (Nov 12th) and WTAND (Nov 15th) and getting to see many of you in person. I hope you can make it. Thanks for all the work folks have done to set these up!

Here’s an interesting story from FNCE at the President’s Reception Sunday night. Gigi Tsonto, the Executive Director of the California affiliate approached me and said, “The people over there (pointing) from New Jersey said I need to talk to you and find out what’s going on in Tennessee. They said your affiliate is the best. Do you have a minute?” Of course I did.

Please reach around and pat yourself on the back! YOU and those who came before us, have established TAND as one of the most recognized, best organized and most efficient affiliates in the country! They are literally talking about us, and you, from coast to coast.

It is a pleasure and honor to be a member of such a group. Let’s keep this thing rolling!

NAND Event Recap

NAND has had a great start to the year! We have had our annual intern event welcoming all dietetic interns in the area, a CEU journal club, and our kick-off networking event already! NAND Members were able to mingle, get to know each other, make succulents to take home, and participate in a Piyo workout class. We had a great turnout! Next up is our first member meeting on Monday, November 4th 5:30-7pm. We are offering 1.5 CEUs for the event and will have two great speakers. NAND members will learn about how to screen for eating disorders in all all patient populations and receive an update for TAND. We are looking forward to the upcoming events and rest of this year! If you are in the Nashville area or know somebody who is you can refer a friend to NAND and receive a Target gift card!

Professional Awards for Tennessee Dietitians Coming Soon!!!

Currently each district should be in their process for nominating and selecting district winners for each of the professional awards.  Over the next month, the state will be seeking nominations for the following awards to be recognized at the state level.

  • Outstanding Dietetic Educator Award (ODEA)
  • Outstanding Dietetic Student Award (ODSA)
  • Recognized Dietetic Technician of the Year Award (RDTY)
  • Outstanding Dietitian of the Year Award (ODY)
  • Emerging Dietetic Leader Award (EDL)
  • Iris Award
  • Preceptor of the Year Award (POY) 🡪 New this Year!  District winners of Preceptor of the Year will be the only submissions for the state award.

PLEASE NOTE: District winners of Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year will be recognized at the state level.  There will not be an individual state winner since the Academy recognizes all district winners.

Advanced Practice and Certification Scholarships: Seeking Applications!

Tennessee and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognizes the importance of dietitians seeking advanced practice and specialty certifications.  This takes dedication, time, and money! Save the Date – TAND Hill Day – February 12th, 2020

Mark your calendar for an exciting day of ADVOCACY on the Legislative Hill in Nashville.  We will start the day at 10 AM to give everyone time to drive in that morning and possibly save a night in a hotel. (Note: Hotel options will be provided at a later date for those in need.)  Wrap up will be sometime mid-afternoon to allow time to return home that evening.  We are arranging for a couple of legislators to visit us in the morning and then we will break around noon to hit the hill!  This should offer great opportunity for our state senators and representatives to meet Tennessee dietitian nutritionists and to hear about our expertise.  We will let them know that we are the ones to contact if they are ever in need of assistance with information that relates to our profession.  If there is any pressing matter related to nutrition, such as any upcoming Childhood Nutrition legislation, we will certainly take advantage of the opportunity to advocate for that.  More information will be coming out as we get closer to the date, so keep a watchful eye.   For now, please reserve the date on your calendar and plan to have your voice heard as a Tennessee voting citizen and to promote yourself as the Nutrition Expert!  For more information, contact Ginger Carney (ginger.carney@stjude.org).


Message from Students of Tennessee Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (STAND) 

Fellow TAND members, I hope you are all enjoying a wonderful fall! My name is Ash Abro and I am the President-Elect for the 2019-2020 fiscal year and President for the 2020-2021 fiscal year of the Students of Tennessee Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (STAND). I am a junior majoring in dietetics and minoring in biology at Middle Tennessee State University. I am also a student ambassador and project assistant for Blue Raiders Drink Up grant funded by Project Diabetes with my school’s Center for Health and Human Services. I communicate with and educate students at my school on the importance of their beverage choices with emphasis on water consumption, which has been an amazing opportunity. Upon graduation I plan to start a Master’s degree in nutrition with or without an internship option, in which, I would start an internship after my Master’s degree. My interests in the field of dietetics are clinical and I am considering specializing in diabetes or oncology. I would like to reiterate the two STAND opportunities as seen in last month’s newsletter:

  1. STAND has an open Social Media Chair for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Students from any didactic program in dietetics or dietetic internship in the state of Tennessee are welcome to volunteer. To volunteer, you must be a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and members of TAND. Students who are TAND members are automatically STAND members and do not require any other forms or processes. The Social Media Chair is for a student leader who would be responsible for social media activities including the STAND Facebook and STAND promotion. This member would serve as a member of the STAND Executive Committee and STAND Board and would receive guidance from the TAND Media Chair and STAND Academic Advisor. If you would like to volunteer, please send a short paragraph explaining why you are an excellent candidate for this position to Olyvia Norton’s email: ogn2a@mtmail.mtsu.edu.
  2. As of this month, STAND will be holding the fundraiser “Dual of the DPDs Donation Drive”. Students enrolled in the DPDs of Tennessee are encouraged to donate non-perishables like canned beans, soups, vegetables, nut butters, etc. that will be given to local organizations concentrated on feeding individuals and families in need. The DPD that collects the most by next month (December) will be recognized in the January 2020 TAND Newsletter with the students of that DPD receiving a prize.

Knoxville Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics Fall Meeting

On Thursday September 26th KAND members gathered at Evolve Nutrition and Yoga to hear owner, RDN and yoga instructor Joanna Goan speak about the numerous health benefits of yoga, mindfulness and meditation. Following the meeting four members participated in a yoga class led by Joanna which challenged and stretched our bodies.


Bylaws Revision

The TAND Board is proposing one minor change to our current bylaws. Please review and send any comments to us at eatrighttn@gmail.com by Friday, December 20.

This change is to reflect how the nominating committee is currently operating to ensure we are in compliance with our bylaws. The proposed new language is:

Composition. The Nominating Committee will consist of three [3] members elected by the members of the Tennessee Academy. Each year two volunteers will be elected to serve on the Nominating Committee under the Nominating Committee Chair who will be serving their second year on the committee. The Nominating Chair Elect is the candidate who receives the highest number of votes, and will serve a two [2] year term; first year as Nominating Committee Chair Elect, and the second year as the Nominating Committee Chair. The candidate who receives the second highest number of votes will serve a one [1] year term as the Nominating Committee Member. The immediate Past President of the Tennessee Affiliate will serve as an ex-officio member of the Nominating Committee.
