January 2020 Newsletter – President’s Message

There is not much to write about as things are slow this time of year for obvious reasons, but not for long.

I want to thank all the Pillars and their Chairs for all the hard work behind the scenes — work which is about to come to fruition with Hill Day, the Annual Meeting, Awards and Scholarships coming up.

Please reach out to serve locally where you feel led, and prayerfully consider helping out our affiliate by volunteering when asked, or reach out to offer your services and expertise.

I pray you all have a blessed and happy and healthy New Year! It is an honor, joy and privilege to serve and work with you!

2020 Tennessee Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Hill Day

Hill Day is an annual TAND event designated for members who are constituents in the state to visit their legislators at the state Capitol in Nashville. This time is dedicated to advocate for important nutrition policy and to bring attention to the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist as the nutrition expert.

TAND members will also hear personally from some legislators in a group setting about current legislation from those directly involved in public policy in Tennessee.

TAND members will meet their respective legislators in groups according to their home address. Meetings are set up by the local public policy/advocacy chair for usually no more than 30 minutes at a time. This time is dedicated to discussing topics that are important to us in the dietetic profession and any relevant legislation that might affect us as dietitian nutritionists.

This is the time to make our voices heard and strengthen relationships with our elected officials!

We look forward to seeing you in Nashville on February 12, 2020! Registration opens in January. See website for registration details!

STAND Update

Happy New Year fellow TAND members! My name is Carmen Bell and I am the Secretary of the Students of Tennessee Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (STAND) for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. I am currently a senior at Middle Tennessee State University, majoring in Nutrition and Food Science-Dietetics, with a Health and Human Performance minor. I am a part of the MT Nutrition Team where I work to educate and raise awareness about nutrition to children, students, faculty, and staff on campus. We do this through presentations, cooking demos, podcasts, and grocery store and dining hall tours. This has been a great opportunity and I thoroughly enjoy interacting with so many people!

After graduation in the spring, I plan to complete a dietetic internship to continue my process of becoming a registered dietitian. Additionally, I want to get my Master’s degree in leadership. Through my experiences, I have had the chance to work with all ages and my goal is to have a career where I can continue working with everyone in an outpatient or inpatient setting. As the STAND secretary, I want to increase awareness and participation in the organization among students in didactic programs and dietetic internships across Tennessee. Being involved in organizations such as STAND is so important and very beneficial to students as they prepare for their future in dietetics. A few updates for this month:

  1. We are so glad to announce our 2 new board members who will be the STAND Social Media Co-Chairs for the 2019-2020 fiscal year, Sarah Turner and Natalie Brandenburg. Sarah is a senior dietetics student at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Natalie is a dietetic intern at Vanderbilt University. Welcome!
  2. Our “Dual of the DPDs and DIs Donation Drive” was very successful! Students in DPD and DI programs across the state of Tennessee donated non-perishable food items that were delivered to local food banks and shelters aimed to feed those in need. The drive ended on December 12th. Thank you to all participating programs for donating over 500 items on behalf of STAND. I am happy to announce the University of Memphis DPD program as the winners- they collected and donated 174 items! Congratulations!
  3. If you are a student member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and TAND, you are automatically a member of STAND and I encourage you to reach out on ways to become more involved. And if you are not a member, it is not too late join!

Students – Graduating soon? You may qualify for the Career Starter Dues Program 
The Academy’s Career Starter Dues Program offers reduced dues rates for members in their first five years of Active category membership eligibility. These graduated dues are offered in a tiered structure based on your RDN or NDTR eligibility data on file with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Dues increase incrementally each year for up to five years to help you get established in the profession. Call the Academy’s Member Service Center at 800/877-1600, ext. 5000 (weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time) or email membership@eatright.org for more information.
Student Opportunity – Build Your Leadership Skills, Boost Your Career and Enhance Your Résumé!
Apply to represent your dietetics program by signing up as an Academy Student Liaison for the 2019–2020 membership year. Only Student members of the Academy are eligible, and just two Student Liaisons will be chosen to represent each program. As a Student Liaison, you’ll participate in the recruitment and retention of Student members and offer invaluable feedback to the Academy. You’ll also:

  • Build and develop your leadership skills.
  • Gain experience to include on your resume.
  • Earn recognition and enter to win prizes via the Student Liaison Fall Award, National Nutrition Month® Student Program and other opportunities.
  • Communicate with dietetic students nationwide.
