Medical Nutrition Therapy…”the cornerstone” of health promotion, disease prevention and management…

Support Access to Medical Nutrition Therapy

Last week, all Academy members were asked to take action on the recently introduced Medical Nutrition Therapy Act.

Access to MNT is more important than ever now that evidence indicates many diet-related chronic conditions are leading to poor outcomes for COVID-19 patients. Expanded access to MNT is especially important for minority populations that have long faced chronic disease health disparities due to socioeconomic inequalities and reduced access to health care, healthful foods and safe places to be active and are now being disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.

This bill would provide coverage under Medicare Part B for MNT for:

  • Prediabetes
  • Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • Dyslipidemia
  • Malnutrition
  • Eating disorders
  • Cancer
  • Celiac disease
  • Any disease related to unintentional weight loss

The MNT Act also allows the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to expand coverage for MNT to other disease or condition as determined medically necessary. The bill would authorize nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical nurse specialists and psychologists to refer their patients for MNT.

If you have not already done so, take action today and urge Congress to Expand Access to MNT in Medicare.

Scholarships for Student Members

In lieu of our Annual Meeting Silent Auction, our districts stepped up to donate to TAND so we can continue to provide scholarships to our student members. A special thanks to the following districts for their donations to the TAND Scholarship fund: Tri-Cities, Knoxville, Nashville, West Tennessee, and Memphis! TAND, and our students, appreciate your support!

Understanding the basics of health care payments and other sources of funding for the services you provide is an asset to every RDN, no matter where you work.

  • Even if you are collecting a salary from your employer, do you know how your position is funded?

Responding to COVID-19: The Renfrew Center

In response to the COVID-19 crisis, The Renfrew Center, dedicated to the treatment of adolescent girls and women with eating disorders, remains open. Our top priority is the health and well-being of our patients, their families and our staff.  Renfrew’s residential campuses in Philadelphia, PA and Coconut Creek, FL are closely following recommendations from the Center for Disease Control as well as the Department of Health and are continuing to accept new patients.

Our 17 non-residential facilities, including a local facility in Nashville, have temporarily shifted Day Treatment and Intensive Outpatient Programming to a virtual platform. This move to virtual services is fully accessible to patients throughout the country from the safety and comfort of their own homes. We have been providing outpatient virtual therapy in each of the states we have locations in for several years, and our staff has been trained and continues to receive education in telehealth best practices.

Renfrew is dedicated to providing the same exemplary treatment services we have been known for over the last 35 years.  For more information or to schedule an assessment, please visit or call 1-800-RENFREW (736-3739).
