Letter from the President

Hello TAND Members—-Happy National Nutrition Month!

I hope you all have found a way to celebrate this special month.  It’s OUR month and an opportunity to share and promote the good foods we know are a part of a healthy lifestyle and improve quality of life.  This year’s theme, “Personalize Your Plate,” promotes creating nutritious meals to meet individuals’ cultural and personal food preferences. Because our country is made up of people from so many different cultures with different food preferences and traditions, it is important for us to assist our patients and clients in making good decisions on how to incorporate the foods they love while still meeting their health goals.  This way we can continue to make “all foods fit” and experience the joy in eating.

Another way to celebrate is on March 10th —-Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day!  Spread the word about how we as RDNs are THE nutrition experts!  Be good to yourselves and recognize the dedication of RDNs as leading advocates for advancing the nutritional status of Tennesseans and people across the country.

This message was driven home to our elected officials during Hill Week (Feb. 22-26, 2021), and still being discussed with some legislators that were not available during those particular dates.  I urge everyone to continue to be an advocate for our profession every change you get.  The Tennessee Assembly is currently in session and will be for the next few months.  Now is a good time to contact your elected officials who represent you to communicate what is important for you as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.  Let them know who you are and that you are a resource for any food and/or nutrition issue that they may be faced with.  If you are a constituent, they WILL listen to you!  The month of March would be an excellent time for you to reach out to touch base with them; let them know we are celebrating National Nutrition Month and that food and nutrition issues are important to you and are your area of expertise.

We look forward to our series of online educational seminars next month which is taking the place of our Annual Meeting.  If you have not registered for this yet, please click here to register! The seminars promise to provide exciting information and a chance to visit virtually with your friends and colleagues across our great state of Tennessee.

Thanks for all you do to make our professional organization shine.  Enjoy YOUR month!

STAND Executive Committee Introductions

My name is Ashley Feltner and I am the STAND Treasurer/Secretary for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. I am a recent Middle Tennessee State University graduate where I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Food Science in Winter 2020. Within the next few years, I plan to attend a Future Education Model (FEM) program to continue my studies to become a registered dietitian. I am also a Student Liaison for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, an active member of MTSU’s chapter of Nutrition and Dietetic Association (NDA) and Food Science Association (FSA). I work at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt as a Nutrition Assistant II, Formula Room. On a typical day, I review physicians’ orders and create customized formulas and fortify mothers’ milk/ donors’ breast milk to provide the patients with essential nutrients to help them grow properly. In the future, I would love to work in a clinical setting focusing on gastrointestinal disorders. Since I have personally struggled with a digestive disease, I have the ability to empathize the patient’s concerns, desires and emotions. I am thankful to have these opportunities to be able to connect with our members!

My name is Katie Arnette and I am proud to be the Marketing Chair of the Students of Tennessee Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (STAND) for the 2020-2021 year. I am currently in my final year in the dietetics program at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) and am slated to graduate this spring! I currently serve as the President of the MTSU Nutrition and Dietetics Association and am a Student Board Member for the Nashville Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. After graduation I plan on attending a supervised practice internship and pursuing advanced degrees. I additionally enjoy serving my community as a full-time intern at Nourish Food Bank and coaching group fitness classes at local CrossFit gyms! I am excited to serve with the leadership team of STAND and hope to help spread the word about the exciting opportunities of being involved in the dietetics community.

My name is Beth Heise, and I am the Nominating Chair of the Students of Tennessee Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (STAND) for 2020-2021. I am currently in my senior year at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) and will be graduating in May of 2021. I am also currently the President of the Pinnacle Honor Society, an honor society specifically for nontraditional students, and the Community Service Chair for our school’s Nutrition and Dietetic Association (NDA). This is actually my second degree, with my first being in education, and I taught kindergarten for a couple years before landing in the dietetics program at MTSU. I have truly found my passion in dietetics and cannot wait to start a dietetic internship in August. After the internship, I hope to start as a clinical dietitian in a VA hospital working with veterans. Leadership and teamwork are important in the field of dietetics, so I encourage any student member to apply to become a STAND board member to enhance these essential skills.
