The University of Tennessee, Department of Nutrition seeks an individual for part-time employment who will contribute to clinical teaching, in our Dietetics concentration (undergraduate) and Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics concentration (graduate) beginning in Fall 2023. This includes two ACEND-accredited programs that train future dietetics professionals: 1.) Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), and 2.) Graduate Program in Nutrition and Dietetics (GP). This is primarily a clinic-based teaching position. It is offered with an initial 1-year appointment, with appointment renewable for periods of 1-5 years based on performance and ongoing program needs. Individuals in these positions will contribute to the mission and strategic priorities of the ACEND-accredited dietetics programs, Department of Nutrition, College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.


  • Direct student learning in the clinic setting in assigned Cherokee Health Systems clinics. This is the primary role of this position, and includes the following tasks:
    • Monitor and evaluate student performance in the clinic, including grading
    • Contribute to ongoing refinements of assignments across clinical-based courses
      Provide program monitoring data based on student performance in the clinic setting
    • Collaborate with Cherokee Health Systems clinic personnel and program liaison to Cherokee Health Systems in arranging clinic-based student experiences (e.g. orientation to objectives of clinical experience, course syllabus, clinical schedule, etc.) as appropriate.
    • Collaborate with program directors to identify the types of clinical experiences needed for optimal clinical education of students.
    • Ensure courses taught reflect ACEND-required performance indicators and competencies and current evidence-based practice.
  • Work with other clinical faculty to revise aspects of the program, as needed
    • Participate in the development of academic policies affecting the admission, progression, graduation and dismissal of students in conjunction with other program faculty and under the direction of program directors.
    • Participate in the selection process.
  • Serve the Department of Nutrition, University, community and profession, depending upon experience, interest, and program needs:
    • Participate in departmental faculty, standing committee, task force and other meetings
    • Participate in community and professional activities as appropriate

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned master’s degree in Nutrition or related field by time of appointment
  • Credentialed as a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)
  • Licensed as a licensed dietitian nutritionist (LDN) in Tennessee prior to start of employment
  • 1+ years clinical practice experience post credentialing
  • Evidence of successful clinical and/or classroom teaching experience
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Ability to direct evidence-based medical nutrition therapy intervention for a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, overweight/obesity, hypertension, prediabetes, diabetes, and behavioral health conditions in adults and children
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially with a diverse group of students and colleagues
  • Ability to meet requirements for onboarding with the program’s primary clinical partner, Cherokee Health Systems

Desirable Qualifications:

  • 3 or more years clinical practice experience post credentialing
  • Expertise in motivational interviewing and the ability to guide students in developing motivational interviewing skills
  • Experience with instructional media and technology
  • Clinical experience with underserved populations
